Star Categorisation criteria for hotels needs revamp

G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister for Tourism, Culture & DoNER, has said that the current categorisation system doesn’t really differentiate between a 100+ room hotel and a 10-20 room hotel. “It ruins the whole India experience for tourists,” he stated. Sharing his observations and concerns over the star categorisation criteria for hotels in India, he explained, “I noticed that even a 10-key hotel in Kerala is applying for, and eventually receiving 5-star categorisation just so it can get a license for opening a bar. Now imagine, a tourist from Italy or Spain booking a 5-star hotel in Kerala only to see ten rooms upon his arrival.” The union minister also shared that he is in talk with the government to revamp the entire process for hotel classification.
